I'm not sure if you are denigrating or promoting python?

I can tell you the "free" issue cuts a lot of corners in a company.  If IT 
doesn't have the machines locked down, it is a whole lot easier to run a 
free program than a paid for program simply because you can't run a program 
you can't buy.

I had *exactly* that experience in a company once.  I had $2,000 budgeted in 
the program so I could use MPE Forth to debug my hardware without involving 
the software people.  It was a company with a lot of infighting and the 
HW/SW divide was as wide as it could get.  When it came time to spend the 
money one of the program managers sat down in the road and wouldn't allow 
the purchase.

That was far from the most ineffective thing the company ever did.
