BASIC.

It's interpreted. It's easy to learn. It handles strings and
integers, which covers 90% of general purpose programming. An entire
generation of programmers were taught it in public school, along with
Pascal, at least in the U.S.

Older factory machines use BASIC for industrial control. It'll
typically have an escape character to switch the interpreter to machine
specific commands for a specific line of code.

What languages are they teaching in public school nowadays? That will
be what the current generation of programmers expect. You can't expect
all of your programmers to be formally trained in college or
university. Some have to make do with a high school or primary
education. I.e., what is the lowest common denominator? Of course,
whatever language they teach might be regional, e.g., EU may teach
something different from the US.

After searching for a while, I see mentions of RobotC, EasyC, Scratch,
Alice, Kodu, Java, C++, Visual Basic.NET, and Ruby. Of course, Swift
is another language that has become popular recently.

https://scratch.mit.edu/

Apparently, the goal is to start teaching kids programming concepts
prior to introducing them to text-based programming languages like C,
Forth, Fortran, Pascal, Basic, etc. This would be similar to teaching
LOGO to young children decades ago. See here:
http://blog.acthompson.net/2012/12/programming-with-blocks.html

The link below lists C++, HTML, JavaScript, Perl, PHP, Python, and Ruby
as the most important and the most commonly taught programming
languages in high school:
http://www.computerscienceonline.org/cs-programs-before-college/

TIOBE Index ranks all of those except HTML. The top of the list is
Java, C, C++, Python, C#, Visual Basic.NET, Javascript, PHP, Perl.
https://www.tiobe.com/tiobe-index/

The TIOBE ranks is probably a good place to start your selection.
Lua ranks low. Python ranks high. Ruby and Swift rank in-between.
