I speak of 60-80 GB of data from 5 years of storage. But the single BIGGEST single file is 486 MB heavy. The second biggest is 266 MB big. Most videos are under 200 MB. Noone has to download the full courses at a time. Most of audio are just some tens MB. Also another aspect has to be taken into account : this is just the "seeding" point, the funnel neck, but I will encourage "leeching" (that is redistribution among them). Thirdly, I offer a totally free service and I'm not supposed to offer any other warranty or minimum bandwidth. If one can't be bothered to download, then it's up to him, not my fault. This funnel neck (or was bottle neck ?) is unavoidable whichever home-based service I chose I guess. And true clouds does not have SPACE enough. Having to choose between cutting space and slow speed, I'd rather choose low speed. > > 500kbit / sec is 62.5 kByte / sec. > > It will take your users > - 16 seconds to download 1 MB of data > - (about) 3 minutes to download 10 MB of data > - (about) half an hour to download 100MB of data and one hour for the heaviest ones. > - (about) 4.5 HOURS to download 1 GB > > Somewhere you mentioned 80GB of data total ... that's OVER 15 DAYS of > downloading - for ONE person, alone, trying to download stuff from you. but it would not be the tipical usage mode. In a realistic scenario a few student would download a couple of files / week. That's not how HTTP transfers work at all. Maybe you should ask your school / university / whatever for some space to provide these things. Let's work the problem in the other direction.
What computing facilities do the students have ?
Does each student have a phone ?
Does each student have a laptop ?
Do they use desktops at home ?
Are the only computers the ones that
are available in the classroom itself ?
If they have no consumption device, that's
your first problem.
If the students generally have laptops, they
can "fill the disk" of the laptop while in
the classroom. Sneakernet solves the problem
of insufficient networks. Even if you hand out
one USB key, and the students pass it from
one student to the next, the students will eventually
get the files. And without tying up the
network forever.
Smartphones and tablets could have 32GB eMMC
and not have sufficient storage to hold the
entire file set.
In our city, the public library serves as a
"computer center". You could see if the librarian
would host the files there, and the students could
visit the library building and "fill up". For
students without computers, the public library
computers could be used as the "viewing device".
Storage costs money. Even if the student loads
the file set on a hard drive, the storage space
still costs money. If the laptop hard drive
isn't large enough, a larger one may need to be
purchased.
These are questions you ask before the project
even starts.
Paul

That's why the ones that uses ITC, use BYOD strategy (I use G4 for my connection at school, school bandwidth is unreliable, and there are also arbitrary blacklist that makes useless the small one avail.) > > If they have no consumption device, that's > your first problem. The service is offered "as is" :) > If the laptop hard drive > isn't large enough, a larger one may need to be > purchased. > > These are questions you ask before the project > even starts. the "project" (not actually a project) is in the state DISCONTINUED. But still I'm trying to put at use the existing material, if an inexpensive way can be found. Inexpensive for me at least. I'd like to barely enable the download (free of charge, as I'm not granted any support of any kind, not even the slightest appreciation, nothing at all). After that, if no one is willing to use the files, this is not really a problem of mine. Maybe you have cracked the maze. This solution seems really perfect. I have any right to share the contents on a P2P network. It would work. I just have two things to decide. 1) Whether or not I'd be willing to seed in a LITERAL sense (not just by name, being IDLE most of the time, but uploading constantly), as it could block most my other net activities (yes, I could always assign a modest quota to the upload bandwidth ...) 2) Whether or not to abandon any restriction in access. Now I'm sharing just with my students (as dropbox has this feature), in such a case I'd be sharing with the world over. But the idea is darn good ! I never encripted big stuff, I dunno if it would take long, but I'd be a one-time work so not a tragedy. Do you know a cyphering system free and avail both on Linux and Android and Windows ? I'm sure there are quite plenty, but I did never cypher anything actually, so the advices I got in the past simply vanished ... I once had installed some "PGP" but it was on Mint and I have not reinstalled on Debian. Anyway it should be really cross-platform : almost none of my students use Linux, most of them Android (on smartphones), some Windows (on Desktops). -- 1) Resistere, resistere, resistere. 2) Se tutti pagano le tasse, le tasse le pagano tutti Soviet_Mario - (aka Gatto_Vizzato)

I don't know :\ I mean, I'm not sure what NFS is, so I can't tell. I'd like something DropBox, accessible (with credentials logins and possibility to share sub-storage with different level of control, i.g. for non admin users just view and download, for myself also to ADD and MODIFY files) from remote, but with no storage on 3rd party servers, just on my partition. In that case I'd keep the machine on power obviously. Ah a detail I didn't give formerly : I have an ADSL connection with dynamically assigned IP, thus the clients/server should be able to manage some form of IP-independent net communication >> >> Obviously safe sw (not easily intruded), and able also to >> sub-share parts of the cloud space with other users invited >> or given some credentials. > > Sounds like NFS to me.
