I'm using Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 64bit. I hear people talking about Ubuntu, or MATE or KDE etc and I've tried a few other versions (distros) of linux and have never quite seemed to find one I like. I'd almost list to have a table of DE and features etc for each distro to pick from. I'm happy with mint cinnamon. It has a simple windows like menu, categories breakdown in the menu, no big gaudy icon type side bars for a menu. I can have panel at top and or bottom. But I wonder if there are other DE that are similar or distros that are similar and might be better. I guess I chose mint because it was high on distro watch so I guessed it was best. Maybe there isn't but I'd take suggestions. I can load any in my VM and test. Thanks.

The advantage of Mint is that it is based on Ub which has tons of apps in its repos, partly because of its Deb heritage and partly because there are a lot of Ub developers; another Ub-kin advantage is the myriad .ppa/s developed for apps which aren't in the repos; another Ub-kin advantage is the number of users and helpers to ask questions of or articles to read to get help. I wonder if it is possible for you to figure out what it is that you want that you don't have in your Cinnamon and whether or how it would be possible to achieve it in Cinnamon or some other, such as XFCE. I would encourage you to -1- try Mint 17.3 or 18 XFCE -2- experiment with tinkering with the appearance or other features which you want changed -- Mike Easter

The problem is, you don't know you miss it till you see that it's there and you could have had it. I'll give XFCE a try, that is one I haven't done yet. I'm good enough to have tinkered with my own icon, desktop and borders themes and modified others that were close to get them closer to what I want. Remove transparency, change color, customize icons, things like that. So the look is good, the feel is good. Since so many people use mint in Distrowatch.com I guess maybe I'm at the top of the hill already. There isn't much I can get to work well except the typical things people complain about like wine is such an outdated version of windows, that type of thing, but I won't get that fixed in my lifetime. Thanks.

One advantage of trying lots and lots of different distros as opposed to reading generically about DEs is the opportunity to see how different 'distro adapters' have tricked out their particular implementation. As one example, LXLE is like Lubuntu in that it is based on Ub with an LXDE DE, but it is *distinctly* different from Lub in how he does it. As another example, Linux Lite is another Ub which uses XFCE as its DE, but it is significantly different in how it goes about helping the user 'do things' to customize it. You can read the reviews such as DW and Gary Newell's, but you kinda haveta try it to feel it. I get a lot from booting a live, but some prefer a VM. http://www.everydaylinuxuser.com/2016/09/an-everyday-linux-user-review-of-linux.html http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20160718#lite http://www.lxle.net/ -- Mike Easter

You don't have to change distro to try a different 'Desktop Environment'; just install whatever you want to try. You might have to build some of the less popular ones from source, but most distros have a good selection in their repos. Some distros do modify the Desktop Environment the installation system defaults to, and sometimes some other DEs they make available. Arch Linux lists 22 Desktop Environments, and more Window Managers than I care to count. Neither list is definitive. <https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/desktop_environment#List_of_desktop_environments> <https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Window_manager#List_of_window_managers> -- -- ^^^^^^^^^^ -- Whiskers -- ~~~~~~~~~~

A quick search resulted in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_environment It should get you started in your search for the "perfect" DE. Or you can just run a window manager (there are dozens) with menus and a panel or two. Not a true DE, but accomplishes the same thing. I run Openbox with a single LXPanel. Stef

You can take a look at distrowatch.com, they list the major applications, but have you tried KDE in one distro, it will most likely not be different in another (more than icons and default theme). > But I wonder if there are other DE that are similar or distros that are > similar and might be better. I can load any in my VM and test. enlightment lxqt pantheon gnustep windowmaker xfce fluxbox and there are a number of window manager like ctwm which you can also use, nothing of these should require you to install another distro... -- //Aho

I distro hopped for over a decade, and one day realized Linux is Linux. You are correct it all happens in the desktop. The rest is how the distribution chooses to package and manage the programs. If you are happy with your distribution, and your desktop, yet want to try another distro there are plenty of live editions that you can try out which won't make any changes to your hard drive. You can also install a virtual machine and run other distributions in a vm, but vm's require more memory, and a little more tinkering. Lastly, you can load different de, but they are usually vanilla, and not a tailored de as you have in your Mint Mate. This also requires more tinkering.

That helps one to decide how they might want to tweak their installed distro. (And/But) It is easier to do the hopping than to do some of the tweaking which has been discovered. I was recently pleased to see how strongly Ub had embraced Mate by making it one of the flavors and with the Ub Mate Welcome function which boots on the live and also facilitates installation of some apps after the install. I tend to think of Mate's and Cinnamon's popularity as arising significantly from Mint's embrace, but Ub is also doing a good job with Mate now. Cinnamon, not as much. If one wants to Cinnamon 3 Ub, they need to do it with .ppa, not the repos. So, I think Cinnamon is no where near being an official Ub flavor like Mate. I would assume that is because there are already two Ub flavors from Gnome3, Unity and Gnome. -- Mike Easter

One value of working with different distros, DEs, and even OSs is you get to understand how your current preferred system works better. You might find reason to change, or you might not, but either way you learn what works for you better. It is similar to learning multiple languages, even if you still mostly speak your native language you learn it better. -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

Particular distros offer some Deskto Environments in their repositories, and some they don't. You will have to work harder to get Gnome on Slackware, for example. There is a question of reliability. Some distros offer more packages, and some of them happen to be broken. Some offer less packages in official repositories and more in unofficial ones. Some distros have less reliable unofficial repositories, others not. For example, I had bad experiences with Suse and Fedora unofficial repositories. "Mainstream' distros are, generally, updated more often than 'remix' distros. 'Remix' distros often end up in one of three ways: - complete fork from original distro - being updated rarely, having outdated kernels and libraries and preventing user from installing newer apps - being abandoned Some distros have rolling release policy, which is definitely not suitable for everyone.

During install you are offered KDE, Gnome, Other. Choose "other", and then you will see xfce. As for a release, choose "Leap 42.1". Or if you like betas, 42.2. If you install on a virtual machine, change the default partition setup. By default it will use btrfs for "/", and if the space is big enough, a separate "/home" with XFS. On virtual machines, I think it is better to avoid btrfs, and go with ext4. For btrfs I would recommend a root partition of 100 GB to take full advantage of its features (snapshots). -- Cheers, Carlos.

I've been trying lots of distro's over the last few months and there is one I keep going back to and that is PCLinuxOS KDE edition. http://www.pclinuxos.com/get-pclinuxos/ There is a Mate version as well but don't install the Full Monty as it is being withdrawn soon. PCLinux is a rolling update so install it once then it just updates instead of having to re-install every few months like some other distros. There is also a very friendly forum. Solydxk was another that I really liked but the software in its repository was lagging behind current versions. The desktop icons were especially nice. https://solydxk.com/ Zorin maybe a little too like MS Windows and beginerish for you but maybe worth a look. http://zorinos.com/ I didn't particularly like Manjaro, it seemed a little bland. I also had a go at Arch Linux but all that inputting via the keyboard left me with sore fingers and a mighty headache. -- mick

Persons with advanced technical knowledge/aptitude may find Mint a 'boring' distro because it's working mostly free of trouble. I fall under the 'technical challenged' category and am very happy with Mint 17.3 KDE installed to my desktop computer. I got carried away installing Mint18 KDE to my laptop computer and am unimpressed with its desktop environment; In my view and personal experience this particular KDE version is unstable and less configurable than the version in 17.3; it was released to soon imho. I stumbled across Maui Linux and found it much more responsive, stable and configurable than Mint18 KDE. It's easily installed to a USB stick and after only a few live sessions replaced it wit Mint18 KDE - good move as far as I am concerned! You could try Maui Linux in your VM; Good luck...

I like Mint... likely my favorite distro... but for ME personally I think KDE is garbage. Oh! I am behind the times and thought it was still in beta... downloading now. Just curious what you find appealing about it. I guess it's an individual 'thing' and got used of it; The plasma display effect is awesome especially if yo have a good-quality monitor; It makes other desktop displays look 'flat'. KDE is highly configurable to suit every taste. I tried Cinnamon and others, they don't champion KDE by a long shot, imho. >> I got carried away installing Mint18 KDE to my laptop computer and am >> unimpressed with its desktop environment; In my view and personal >> experience this particular KDE version is unstable and less configurable >> than the version in 17.3; it was released to soon imho. > > Oh! While you in the tinkering mood you may wish to have a look at Maui Linux also... It's a 'winner' afaic. >> I stumbled across Maui Linux and found it much more responsive, stable >> and configurable than Mint18 KDE. Nowadays I boot in to Windows once (maybe twice) a month to ensure the system and applications are updated.

This is Snit Michael Glasser, a lying imbecile. He is a parasite who does not work gainfully and instead trolls 24/7. He squanders the little income of his wife instead of providing for his family Michael Glasser posts in excess of 20.000 posts just under his "Snit" persona every year for the last 13 years. This does not yet count the thousands of posts he makes under dozens of different sock-nyms whose sole purpose is to give him support in his inane trolling
