One advantage of trying lots and lots of different distros as opposed to 
reading generically about DEs is the opportunity to see how different 
'distro adapters' have tricked out their particular implementation.

As one example, LXLE is like Lubuntu in that it is based on Ub with an 
LXDE DE, but it is *distinctly* different from Lub in how he does it.

As another example, Linux Lite is another Ub which uses XFCE as its DE, 
but it is significantly different in how it goes about helping the user 
'do things' to customize it.  You can read the reviews such as DW and 
Gary Newell's, but you kinda haveta try it to feel it.  I get a lot from 
booting a live, but some prefer a VM.
