I did plenty of daytime BLISS compiles on the TOPS-20 machines and never brought them to their knees.

Note that Endicott managed to salvage the vm370/cms product mission (and ship thousands of vm/4300 systems) but they had to reconstitute a vm370/cms group from scratch. The shutdown of burlington mall group was stealth operation, the people weren't going to be told until the very last minute ... to minimize the number that would be able to escape the move. However, the information leaked early ... and there was a witch hunt to identify the source of the leak ... fortunately for me, nobody gave up the source. Later there was a joke that the head of POK was one of the largest contributors to DEC VMS (because so many people escaped the POK move and went to work for DEC). That functionality didn't come from MACRO-10. It was invoked with the
SEARCH and REQUEST "verbs" of MACRO-10.
Your MACRO-10 program would begin with
SEARCH UUOSYM
REQUEST MACTEN
for TOPS-10 assemblies and
SEARCH MONSYM
REQUEST MACSYM
for TOPS-20 assemblies.

Many people wrote software packages, including languages, and put them in the DECUS library. Someone could have done so for PL/1, if they wanted to.

XDS bought SDS a few years before. CP-6 was an attempt to migrate the current CPV customer base to Honeywell hardware. The SDS/XDS hardware had run it's course. There were interim updates to the Sigma hardware to try and keep the customer base on board. I worked on several of the projects. Expanded memory for the Sigma 9 and MOS memory using a L66 memory cabinet. Increased disk size using a Sigma<->MPC contoller adapter. Also Honeywell 6250 bpi tape drives. Interesting projects. My first exposure to downloading firmware into a device controller during boot up. There is a pretty good write up on the multics mailing list about the battle within Honeywell on which OS would live, Multics, GECOS or CP6. Honeywell could not afford to fund all 3 dev efforts. The problem with the Penn Central's computerization, along with the rest of the railroad's problems, was a lack of compatibility between two different systems, compounded by a failure to do any real planning in advance. (Ref Wreck of the Penn Central, plus other works). Also, not helping was the PRR/NYC rivalry, which remained in effect for decades following the merger; each side believing it was better and blaming the other side for the problems. When they created Conrail, they worked hard not to repeat the Penn Central's mistakes.

ISTM that a good leader can minimize this problem, but it would take a very special person. But simply paying someone a lot of money does not make him a very special person.

In the past, employers did. One good example of a leader of a merged company was Walter P. Marshall, the new president of Western Union. He came from Postal Telegraph and unified the companies.

AMEX spun off a lot of its dataprocessing in 1992 as First Data in what was the largest IPO at the time. Later FDC and First Financial were somewhat in competition somewhat to buy WU, FDC dropped out in part because WU wasn't in really good financial shape. Before the end of century, FDC and First Financial merged ... and FDC had to spin off MoneyGram (part of what it got when FDC was spun off from AMEX) ... because the merged company also owned WU (which still wasn't doing good). By the middle of last decade, the explosion in illegal workers (after the start of the century) sending paychecks home spiked WU revenue until it represented half of FDC's bottom line. Along the way there was a proposal for WalMart to get into financial transactions (i.e. the original rhetoric on the floor of congress as to the primary purpose of GLBA ... later better known for repeal of Glass-Steagall ... was if you already had a banking charter you got to keep it, but if you didn't you couldn't get one ... specifically calling out WalMart and Microsoft (i.e. keep new technology competition out of the banking industry). There was a structure to do something like .10-.15 cents per transactions ... but the WU vice-president got it nixed because he was pushing a proposal to WalMar where WU would do such transactions for >>$1 (instead of $.10).
