Again -- as per the BLISS Reference Manual -- each version of the BLISS language includes predefined constants for the size of a word, a memory address, and the smallest addressable unit of memory, specifically to aid programmers in writing code that takes into account the target architecture.

Well, in theory. One could certainly write applications for an IBM mainframe in "standard COBOL". We used import generic software written in standard COBOL that could run on any machine. They did. However, they weren't very efficient. Using the IBM variants (such as COMP-3 for numeric fields) produced much more efficient code (per a previous discussion).

Hardware and OSes all had their quirks. The largest learning curve for learning a new lanugage or OS was learning the quirks which were usually not obvious. /BAH

And system calls... BLISS did not have any native I/O. That was supplied by additional packages. XPORT was one such, but I wasn't concerned with cross-platform issues and I don't remember ever using it.

I'm not aware of any product for the 36-bit line written in Bliss-36. The
FORTRAN compiler was written in Bliss-10, which was shipped on the installation
tape. (Why anyone assumed that customers might make mods to the FORTRAN
compiler has always escaped me.)
Back in the 1990s, when DEC^WDigital announced that they were making Bliss-16
and Bliss-32 zero-cost ("free"), XKL had just negotiated the 36-bit IP purchase.
I immediately got hold of Dick Greeley and pointed out that they should do the
same thing with Bliss-36; that happened immediately, and we were able to
include it in the base software on the Toad-1 System.
A few years ago, we needed some changes (at least one change, I forget what) to
Kermit-10. I got hold of Frank da Cruz, who got hold of the original author,
who in turn did the work for us. Kermit-10 had been modified by a couple of
people who hacked on the Macro-10 output of Bliss-10; the new fix(es) were done
to the Bliss-10 sources.
So what was Bliss-36 used for?

All of DECnet outside the monitor and Autopatch were BLISS36. There are
others but I can't recall them right now.

Fixes published in the SPR bulletin would be done by the customers;
patching wouldn't be nice. University kiddies would be modifying
sources to experiment with new features or arithmetic or with
the idea they had a better idea than DEC. I suspect there were courses
which taught how to write compilers which used the sources for
examples and a software source base.

All new development using BLISS on PDP-10s would have to use BLISS-36.
I'm trying to remember the year it showed up on the development
systems. The MCB was a big BLISS36 project. You might take
a look at TOPS-20's BASIC-PLUS-II; that should have been
BLISS-36.

Time.
Bliss-10 was the original version created at CMU for the PDP-10. It was used
at DEC to write a new Fortran compiler (replacing F40). (As I intimated in
another post in this thread, it was used at Columbia to create Kermit-10 for
Tops-10.)
This led to the creation of Bliss-11 at DEC.
When the VAX came along, Bliss was selected as the systems programming language
and new compilers for Bliss-32, Bliss-16, and Bliss-36 were created to provide

No one is faulting you for that. How did you avoid DECnet for forty years? Were all the systems ARPAnet only, no networking whatsoever, or homebrew? I don't know if PDP-10s had ethernet support absent the DECnet product.

My first thought was no, but then I remembered that DEC was trying to sell things like LAT boxes, so maybe it was.

Of course, those types would have wanted each file on a separate tape and charge $$$ for it. That's when DEC no longer existed and every non-development middle manager was tryng to go into "business" for him/herself by controlling a product. /BAH
