The only bugbear with the X86 instruction set is the complicated bit-by-bit encoding of the instruction set which makes more difficult the construction of compilers and decompilers to recreate the original source Mind you, the ARM isn't much better, with a nice 4-bit hex field, but one bit in from the LHS (most significant)

There's also (historically) the Z80, which fitted the enhancements over the 8085 into spare space, making the instruction encoding really random! Even the AVR, I notice, has a bizarre encoding of the 8 bit 'load immediate' instruction, with two separate 4 bit fields in the instruction word that have to be concatenated (and it only works on the *upper* 16 registers). That's one good thing about the PDP-8 - mostly. -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... Use the BIG mirror service in the UK: http://www.mirrorservice.org

Yes, no chance of ROM-able code. But that really didn't become important until later, and the single chip version fixed that. The HD6120 added two stacks, and a way to push and pop the PC. It made subroutine calls two instructions instead of one, of course: JMS subr . . JMP I subr+1 became PPC1 (or PPC2) JMP subr . . RTN1 (or RTN2) -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... You have to keep remembering what registers are used for what. And there is no system to this, you just have to know it. At least that is how I remember it. >Mind you, the ARM isn't much better, with a nice 4-bit hex field, but >one bit in from the LHS (most significant) Mayby not, but I was of the impression it was somewhat more orthogonal. -- mrr Having written some x86 assembly a long time ago. And even with general purpose registers, the OS often dedicates afew so they aren't really available anyway. My pet hate is lack of addressability.
