I always have the quick filter bar visible

So I create customised views such as
past day = age < 1
past 5 days = age < 5
unread or starred = match any (status != read) or (status = starred)

personally I don't extend it to
past year = age < 365
past month = age < 31

but I could.

all those rules are three clicks away, if I was that bothered about 
number of clicks, I could create sub folders of a group with 'n' days of 
messages in them.
