And now it does, although the various colors for sigs and levels of
nesting are gone.

I find this frightening. REALLY frightening. It's like having
duplicate filenames. A disturbance in the Force... I might try that on a
backup to a different partition.

I finally got the forward from AccountA to AccountB to work, and then I
made a filter to put the forwarded messages into a new 'folder' so I
have one viable workaround. I opened a new gmail account to possibly
use if I can't recover AccountA, but having to notify serious entities
of the new email address is fraught with peril for various reasons.
