Methinks you're too kind because I'm not a good troll, not by a long
shot! But I don't aspire to be one. Just an ordinary run-o'-the-mill
variety.

Creative trolls seem to appear only occasionally. One that comes to
mind is Max Varaszlo, who used to troll alt.politics.homosexuality
roughly ten years ago. Have you heard of him?

Oh, I think you are a step or three above that. No drive-by flamings,
no instantly outrageous posts...

I'm afraid I have not had the pleasure of his online acquaintance.

I googled him must now (Varazslo, not Varaszlo -- I blame my Polish
study) and found he was active as one of the atheists in alt.atheism
during the 90's.

Polish study? Impressive. That language always seemed to suffer from a
severe shortage of vowels to me. My own studies in that regard never
went any further than ordering golabki and vodka...

Not in the least impressive. I took a con ed class just so I could
exchange a greeting or two with some of the old timers where I used to
live. The only thing I kept from it was the ability to properly
pronounce Polish words (and Russian words too, after I learned the
Cyrillic alphabet). Otherwise I know no Polish at all.

> from a severe shortage of vowels to me. My own studies in that

No question about it. They're able to string more consonants together
in one unbroken clump than any other language I know of.

Ha. But I'm sure you're multi-lingual, right?

Knowing what the words mean that you so expertly pronounce would be a
great help, I would think...

And then the sneaky bstrds don't even actually pronounce half those
consonants!

English, German, French, plus some mostly forgotten remnants of 10 years
of Latin and six years of Greek. Why do you ask?

Oh, and I did once start to learn Elvish, but I'm not sure that counts.

Cuz you're so damn cool, I knew you had to also be multi-lingual.
That's friggin awesome, Alex! :)

You did? Haha. That's also cool! Quenya, right? Why did you want to
learn it?

This happens.

Let me get this right -- your Polish mate "Bob" Brzenczyszczykiewicz who
originally hailed from Pszczółczyn pronounces all those consonants?

The mind boggles.

It's good to be a cunning linguist...

To be honest, my French is rusty -- haven't used it much in recent
years. Plus, I have this bad habit of intentionally using the worst
possible English accent to annoy pesky French waiters. What can I say?
Pissing off the French is a national tradition.

Having rad TLOTR at least 75 times (that's when I stopped counting, and
I may have been just a tad obsessive) I figured I might as well learn
it. At least, it struck me as a far more sensible choice than leaning
Klingon which is clearly a made-up language from a cheesy American TV show.

Haha! :)

Well as you know yourself, German is also phonetic, and the way the Germans like to fit together multiple words into one (without leaving any traces of a stitch in between) is almost as daunting to those of us who're mostly ignorant of that language.

Ah, so that's what my wife means! Good to know that all I need do is mutter a couple of Spanish sentences to satisfy her. :)

Lol. Yes, I remember reading that the historic enmity changed around 1900 or so with the treaty structure suddenly favoring France over Germany. And it was the Germans own stupidity that did it, IIRC.

(Re: Pat Buchanan's book on the history of the two world wars -- ever read it?)

True. Tolkien has much more class.

Okay, that settles it. I'll have to read LOTR for sure now.

That name, BTW, was not an invention if mine. I googled it.

German is comparatively easy: it has rigid rules, a far smaller
vocabulary than English, and the practice of creating new words by
sticking together the appropriate smaller words follows rules, too (and
is usually easily deducible.

Thus, it is relatively easy to disentangle the
"Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz", or
the law regulating the ministerial competence for supervising the
correct labelling of beef.

Similarly, it is quite easy to decypher
"Verkehrsinfrastrukturfinanzierungsgesellschaftsgesetz" as
the law regulating the state body financing traffic infrastructure.

And yes, all these are pronounced the way they are written, so take
that, Poland!

I suspect you will find that actions need to follow words.

:-)

Anyway, for domestic bliss and harmony a husband only needs to know five
words: "yes, dear" and "I am sorry".

If you wish to elaborate, feel free to add "you are right, of course".

:-)

Not sure about the French (we always suspect that they are rather short
on a sense of humour, as demonstrated by their adoration of Jerry
Lewis), but from our side it was always less a case of proper enmity and
more a matter of tweaking the nose of a favourite cousin.

Sorry, but I haven't.
I do try to avoid Pat Buchanan and all his works and deeds and words.

I have read extensively on WWII, though.

Wow, I would have bet that you'd just made it up. The szcz combination
is common (and Cyrillic devotes a single letter to it, IIRC), but I
didn't know they could also stick an additional cz in front of it. I'd
think it would be a challenge for anybody to pronounce quickly.

Haha. Those words are very daunting, to say the least. I knew they had
long words, but I hadn't known they were that long! :)

Good for you that you're able to just rattle them off. Do you speak
German regularly, or just when you travel to the continent?

Too late. But I'm sure I'll still enjoy the book. Thanks. :)

Wow! (I had to delete it from my response because my usenet software
won't accept that many characters!)

What does it mean?

There can't be that many Elves about to speak it with.

I am not sure that Elvish even _has_ a counting system.

They must do!

Even dumb-as-rocks trolls have a counting system:
"one, two, many lots".
