Just as the mind can affect the body (think placebo effect), the body can affect the mind. A suffering body can have all sorts of dramatic effects on the mind. Indeed, in shamanistic religions, suffering of the body is a common pathway to creating visions and connections to the divine. For that matter, this process is also known in Christianity. Self-harm such as flagellation is a known and approved route for Christians to achieve a glimpse of their deity.
