What size? Must be a lot less than the half gigabyte current
smartphones have. Look for LPDDR3.

In operation, yes. But the self-refresh current is about 20mW/GB in the
mobile low power SDRAMs - and phones have half a gigabyte now. My
mobile phone has a 1700mAh battery, which means at 3.8V and ideal
conditions, the DRAM self-refresh drains the battery in two weeks. So
no way to achieve the one month standby time of my LG GS100 with a much
smaller battery. If I look at the standby times calculated with GO
Power Master, it delivers exaclty the numbers I calculate from the DRAM
spec. Standby is DRAM consumption.

Of course, once you turn your smartphone on, the display, the CPU and
GPU, the WLAN chip, the 3G connection and all that drain your battery
much faster. But for standby with only GSM on (accept calls and SMS),
the DRAM is the sucker. The typical smartphone is in connected standby,
which is a lot worse - WLAN on, 3G on, frequently checking for mails,
for instant messages (WhatsApp or whatever), Facebook updates, and so
on. There should be something similar to the GSM messaging system,
which is very well designed to save power.
