The modern German is an offspring of an old-German, which was a language
widely spoken in Europe.
The Swiss German is actually a relatively modern German, but the Swiss
try to make it more seperate from the German in Germany, while the
Germans in Germany want to unite the German and create a form, which is
called 'high-German' in Germany.
But in fact these are all dialects of the same language, which was
widely spoken throughout Europe in medieaval times.
Because Germany as a country is extremly young (only 150 years) and
composed from a number of tiny kingdoms and dutchies, we have also very
local dialects, that stem from these formerly seperate states.
Now the Swiss, Bavarians and Austrians were more or less the same
people, but united into different nations, they have also different
dialects.
These differences of the dialects between these countries are now
getting greater, while inside the countries they are becoming smaller.
In case of the Swiss this is seeming wanted as kind of expression of
Swiss nationalism, while the Germans in Germany regard Switzerland as
tiny tourist trap, (what is not benefitial for the relations.)

Charlemagne ('Karl der Große' in German) was actually French and the
middle region of his empire was the current Germany, while the eastern
part the current Austria (= Österreich => 'Eastern Empire').
But that Frankish Empire is gone too long to have any influence today
(roughly a millenium).
