Einstein had serious trouble with the difference between vectors and 
scalars in many cases in the same text. That cross was only an obvious 
example.

But as I have written a lot of comments, you can also find the other 
instances of similar problems in my annotations.

OK, you are absolute right, that the cross was used in Germany as 
general sign for multiplication in that era.

So far so good.

But theoretical physics is mainly mathematical by nature, hence the 
rules in that realm are much more rigorous than for the common people.
