After watching the Opal system on public transport in Sydney
recently and getting my own geriatrics Opal card basically 
because its free and I'll need one if I ever show up in Sydney
again any time soon, I did wonder what they do about those
who don't bother to tap their card before getting on one of
the things like the light rail trains which don't actually have
gates which force you to tap your card to get thru the gate. 

I did notice with the light rail that the conductor did get
a few people to wave something at his handheld thing. 
Is that to check if they had tapped their Opal card on the
pole at the station before getting on the train and they
will be fined if they haven't done that ?  

Didn't notice the conductor doing that with many
people so the chance of catching fare dodgers isn't
that great. 

Couldn't find anything much with google, just some
discussion about schemes to trigger the daily and
weekly cap on what you get slugged. 

And presumably with the phasing out of tickets
completely which happens in days now, they
wont even have conductors on the stuff like
the light rail because they wont be selling
tickets to people like tourists anymore. 

Corse they can certainly have ticket inspectors
do spot checks any time they like.
