But I'm not sure that it's worth my time to do so, or that it would be worth anyone else's time to read what I come up with. The same arguments are made over and over again with no one really gaining new understanding, let alone producing better software as a result. I have been commenting here mostly because Bart is wrong in substance and intent, and that deserves rebuttal. Moreover, it is also apparent that he is immune to correction, and incapable of nuance or deeper understanding. However, that does not mean he is entirely without a point: other languages do just fine defining things that C does not. UB is not some magic thing that makes C uniquely special and well-suited for the things it is used for; if anything, UB is a bit of an embarassment. The argument _for_ UB now is that it let's compilers optimize C and make the resulting object code faster. Ok, but one could also image a language taking a different approach, where it defines semantics that can be aggressively optimized. That language would not be C, however. The issue with C23 and `realloc` was unfortunate, and the committee admitted to that. But it also came from real world experience and, in part because of how C is defined and used, in the end they felt that they had no choice but to go in the direction that they did. Perhaps that says something about the pressures they experience due to external forces, or about the overall standards process and the constraints it imposes, and less about the concept of "Undefined Behavior." But I don't think it says anything about the people, their abilities, or for that matter their decisions. It is notable that newer languages have sought to constrain the prevelance of UB in their designs. Some users of C look down on that, asserting that people who desire a better-defined language are simply lazy; inferior programmers who would be better off in a less intellectually demanding field. That none of this would be an issue if they just wrote better code. I think that attitude is noxious: more than 50 years of experience with C across the industry has shown that those claims do not hold up to serious scrutiny. - Dan C.
