What is "the speed of Earth from the > point of view of observer X" - according to > the teachings of your bunch of idiots? Relative to what? The "fixed stars" make it clear that the earth is rotating about its axis every day, and we know that it is in orbit around the sun. We now know enough of the dynamics of our Galaxy to know that the Sun and its planets are in orbit around the centre of our Galaxy, and take about 225 million years to complete one circuit. That means that we are travelling at 230 km/s, approximately 1/1300th of the speed of light. Our galaxy is on a collision path with the Andromeda galaxy and will probably hit it in 4.5 billion years. The speed along that path is about 110 kilometres per second. It would be nice to know how that direction of travel relates to our rotation around the centre of our own galaxy, but I'm not going to extend my search to find out. I don't have any propriety interest in the astronomers who work this sort of stuff out, and they don't seem to be any kind of bunch of idiots. If you weren't some kind of idiot - or at least less woefully ill-informed, you would have been able to work this out for yourself. -- Bill Sloman, Sydney
