The definition of serious clocks has changed quite a bit in my life-time, and so has the acceptable error. If you want a low jitter clock, the latest technique seems to involve immersing a lump of sapphire in liquid helium and exciting whispering galley modes circulating in the sapphire. The long term stability isn't as good as atomic clocks but the short term stability is rather better. Australia's over-the horizon radar apparently relies on them, if a recent IEEE Spectrum article is to be taken seriously. -- Bill Sloman, Sydney
