EFI controls the ratio of fuel to air.  Air flow is measured with a 
probe downstream of the throttle body and the computer controls how much 
fuel is injected based on a variety of factors.

But, in a high compression engine, it is expecting the correct fuel to 
be used.

Increasing richness won't prevent knocking - it will just waste more 
fuel.  Only benefit is more cooling.  OTOH, knocking leads to mechanical 
damage, not heat damage.

Not significantly, if at all.  High octane just means a slower burn rate.

Nope.  All leaning does is increase the gas temperature until peak is 
reached.  Normally, gasoline engines are run rich side of peak (cooling 
and catalytic converter needs).

Enrichening the mixture can't prevent detonation.  Might delay it 
slightly.  Again, note that detonation occurs at higher power ranges.
