You can't cure knock with timing, because knock is all about the
fuel-air mix and the compression ratio of the engine. More specifically,
it's about the fuel-air mix going "bang" *BEFORE* the spark arrives,
purely from the fact that the compression stroke raises the temperature
inside the cylinder above your fuel-charge's ignition point, causing it
to self-ignite before the spark plug fires.
Nothing you can do by tinkering with the timing is going to help. You
could fire the plug even sooner ("advancing the spark", it's called),
but that can't fix the problem - the fuel-air charge just ignites even
earlier in the compression stroke. Conversely, firing the plug later
(AKA "retarding the spark") is about the same as putting a single round
in a gun, pulling the trigger, then pulling the trigger a second time on
the same cartridge - nothing happens because there's nothing left to go
bang.
On the other hand, if you increase the effective octane rating of the
fuel-air charge by the right amount, the compression stroke completes
with the fuel not yet ignited, the spark plug fires to light things when
they're supposed to be lit, and all is right with the world. Likewise if
you lower the compression ratio, that in turn lowers the temperature
from compression enough that the fuel mix doesn't ignite. A fancy enough
valve system could do that, but I'm not sure such systems exist in
currently produced vehicles - I'd have to do some research to find out,
and I'm not getting paid enough for that, nor am I curious enough to
bother.
