A late friend of mine did that for many years.  He didn't drive around 
town very much and had a very old but serviceable Ford station wagon.  He 
went to Florida every year and had another old car down there to drive 
around.

When he went there he rented a car for a one-way trip and then another 
for the one-way trip back home.  Carried just liability insurance on the 
old cars and both were paid for.  He saved a bunch of money doing that.
