That can be another issue, especially for ex-Windoze users. They don't
know how to use a real computer, so tend to simply close the document
window and leave the application running, which of course takes up RAM.
Too many applications running at once will cause system slowness.
Unused applications should be swapped out and not brought back in until
needed, but there are some applications (like Mail constantly checking
for new emails) that continue to run without any open windows.

If thats' the case and she can't be trained to Quit applications, then
it's probably worth training her to Shutdown when she has finished
using the computer for a while. 

There used to be an add-on that automatically quit applications when
the last document window was closed, but I don't know if that is still
available / works with Yosemite.
