John:

Good questions.

(A) Convenience - edge to AppleShare
-------------------------------------
AFAIK, (currently) to receive a file via FTP on the Apple IIGS requires
first opening an FTP client application (e.g. Ewen Wannop's excellent SAFE2)
to instigate the transfer and then to save the transferred file on the IIGS,
whereas folders (and the files therein) shared under AppleShare are ready to
use as soon as they are saved to the shared folder by your development
machine.

(B) Speed - edge to Uthernet II
-------------------------------------
I haven't yet used an Uthernet II card, but I suspect that its speed smokes
that of Localtalk. SAFE2 FTP transfers should be very quick.

Ideally we would have a speedy ethernet solution that supports AppleTalk for
both GS/OS and ProDOS 8. Apple's never-introduced Ethernet card for the
Apple II series <http://www.apple2.org/AIIEthernet.html> (and its ProDOS 8
and GS/OS support) apparently offered that, but IIRC, the guys who did get
to play with the prototypes say it wasn't really very speedy. To build
something like that now would seem to be a Herculean task, unfortunately.

As Andrew Roughan mentioned, Eric Shepherd has requested (backed with his
own money) the development of an SMB2 compatible FST for GS/OS, but I assume
ProDOS 8 users would not benefit from such an FST.

David Schmidt's ADTPro VEDrive has even greater potential (than it currently
does) provided that he can figure out a way to use the new features of the
Uthernet II to allow moving the driver to the space occupied by the Disk ][
driver, as he has done with his VSDrive driver. You'd still need to get your
file into the disk image that ADTPro is serving, but that probably is not a
big deal and you could automate it.
