As an appendix to this:   the last time it happened (a few days ago) I
was eventually able to print *exactly the same* file to PDF successfully
using *exactly the same computer* as it had consistently failed on the
day before.   Either the problem is coming from random bits of data in
the Wimpslot or it's date-related.   :-)

NB the problem was in the PostScript output, not the PDF conversion....
