The way it is sold is that the user is sold a VPN connection that terminates in one of several nominated endpoints, usually in a different country. The user's traffic is encrypted via the VPN to the endpoint, at which point it is proxied to the target. Yes, it's a proxy but without the complexity of needing the user to worry about how to encrypt the traffic from their PC to the proxy itself. OpenVPN + Squid makes for a very convenient solution, particularly when your endpoints are scattered around the world. In fact, you could offer OpenVPN to a "local" endpoint, and have that endpoint tunnel your traffic over another encrypted link to a remote endpoint where the traffic appeared on the Internet in its original unencrypted form. With enough aggregated traffic flowing between the hosted endpoints it becomes much harder for others to identify where the original user is actually trying to reach. Chris
