Largely gone. otoh I've never done too well with the rolled 'r' in German and Spanish. I used to listen to an X station from Mexico and the DJ could get several seconds out of the 'r' in 'radio' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG1F65ubIaw I think he is using the r to stretch out the syllable for musical effect but the purring sound is impressive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeQG5rv592Q Not much rolling there.

I have read that RP has evolved enough that some US accents are closer to 17th century British than anything modern. I've also read that Quebec French is closer to the French of Louis XIV than modern Parisian French. It's interesting how accents drift with time.

I think the more accurate image is of a fork - with each road developing
in a different way.
Almost by definition rich affluent upper classes did not emigrate to
America. You got mainly the rural poor and the urban dregs.
And they took their languages with them.

The Pilgrim experience in Leiden suggests they were rich. The Virginia Company was organized by the rich though I don't know how many of the wealthy went to the colony. Between Indian massacres, starvation, and a mysterious disappearance of an entire colony it wasn't a great place to live. Jamestown was a swamp for example. Tobacco finally became the cash crop. The Virginia culture was quite a bit different than Massachusetts. Virginia was associated with the Cavaliers.

The problem with these things is that the proposed "common" solution is always either *somebody's* preference (and everyone else can go jump in the lake) or *nobody's* preference (and you're stuck with something stilted and artificial serves nobody well.) And historically, the more insistent the Authorities are on "standards," the worse non-standard folks get treated - some of the abuses perpetrated against speakers of "unofficial" languages and accents (read: how people were speaking before the government decided they should be speaking differently) are downright appalling and/or straight-up crimes against humanity. International English has, thankfully, been mostly free of that, and a pretty laissez-faire affair - which, yes, makes it a mess sometimes... but is *vastly* preferable to the things that happen when linguistic autocrats get involved.

I first heard that line from Red Skelton. Either way, it's old. The speech problem I had as a kid was trilling my Rs with my tongue. Everyone else was doing it all the time, and I felt left out. I can't do it to this day; I suppose in some languages this would be considered a speech impediment. On the other hand, during my futile attempts I got some consolation when I discovered I could make a similar sound farther back in my throat that the others couldn't do. I found I could use it as a substitute for the trilled R in a Spanish class I took a while ago. Recently I came across a reference that describes my sound as a "voiced uvular trill" (as opposed to the "voiced alveolar trill" that I was trying for).
