The behavior, including performance (regardless if you use ' and then EXECUTE or COMPILE,) of the synonym is exactly the same as of the original. This is what I expect from a high-quality implementation. My position is that the dictionary is, in general, a n:1 relationship between names and xts, and n can be zero (for noname). This is as observed. Forth systems which have ALIAS ( xt "name" -- ) have a n:1 relationship, because that's how ALIAS is specified. It's a non-standard word, but since we don't maintain GCC here, we keep our promises for non-standard words. Win32Forth has ALIAS, Gforth has ALIAS, bigForth has ALIAS, it's not going away because we have decided for something else in the standard. The standard in general is open-minded about different ways to implement things. Mandating a particular implementation is pretty much a no-go. We have systems where the word headers are separate from the code; and this is a good way to do it on processors with separated data and code cache, because the word headers then don't pollute the code space. Processors with such separations are ubiqutious. I'm sure you can implement a hash table where you can find things when you look for them, but you can't enumerate it, especially if the hash table is distributed, and the servers keeping the hash table deny enumerate requests.
