Where in the C standard is it defined that structs are layed out in the
order the fields are named, and those fields are naturally aligned? AFAIK
the only requirement the compiler has is that the fields are independent,
and properly aligned (which means different things on different machines).
And pragmas like pack can certainly behave weird depending on command line
options from the compiler (see Microsoft).
This of course provides opportunities of optimizations. Suppose you have a
4 float vector unit and you declare a vector like
typedef struct {
float x, z, y;
int foo;
char * bar;
} somevector;
Now the compiler decides that it is best to swap z and y, and add an
invisible float "w" behind z; so that it can use load-four and store-four
operations and other by-four vector operations to access the three floats
optimally. Do you
a) think any code relying on the particular order and padding is non-
standard
b) agree with me that this aggressive sort of swapping and hidden padding
will introduce a billion bugs in a typical Linux distribution?
