Yes.

Legally that is not required in Australia and it is in fact illegal
for Apple to say that unless you buy the idevice from an
authorised reseller, they have no legal obligations to you at all.

That's a lie too. The seller supplied a second invoice with the serial
number printed on it and Apple can trivially check with them that
it is a genuine invoice and that it is not a fake produced by Don.

And Apple has other ways to check that the ipad has been used
by Don all this time, like checking the ip address its been used
from and noticing that the original Apple ID that was used to
setup the ipad initially contains his company name. So it isnt
a stolen ipad. And as been said repeatedly here, they can get
him to take it to an Apple Store, have the store unlock it and
check what is on that ipad and that Don can tell them what
is on it to prove that it isnt a stolen ipad too.
