Not if you edited in "Reveal codes" mode. That's the point I was making 
- it was possible to see exactly how the document had been created, and 
avoid issues of the sort you mentioned. When MS introduced a "reveal 
formatting" with Word 97 I'd hoped it would be as useful as reveal 
codes, but it was a pale imitation. According to 
<https://word.tips.net/T001837_Reveal_Codes_in_Word.html> it had 
improved with W2002/3, but I can't remember using versions from those years.
