Remember that the XML is just the linearization of the document structure. 
For example, you cannot have opening tags that are not paired with closing 
tags, and vice versa, or improperly-nested tags (e.g. “<tag1> ... 
<tag2> ... </tag1> ... </tag2>”). It is simply impossible to create such 
documents; if you did, they would be seen as “corrupted”.

The structure is hierarchical. Formatting is defined by style runs, not by 
embedded codes. That’s why you can’t make screwups like those that word 
processors based on embedded codes are prone to.
