Anyone wanting to connect to another system can do so by name if there
is some Domain Name Service (DNS) server that has the name to ip address
defined.
Take yahoo.com for instance. Currently those are
$ whois yahoo.com | grep 'Name Server:'
Name Server: NS1.YAHOO.COM
Name Server: NS2.YAHOO.COM
Name Server: NS3.YAHOO.COM
Name Server: NS4.YAHOO.COM
Name Server: NS5.YAHOO.COM
So if I
$ ping -c1 yahoo.com
one of the above DNS servers returns 72.30.35.9 and I can ping it.
A reverse lookup of that ip address gets the requests set to one of
the servers which returns media-router-fp1.prod1.media.vip.bf1.yahoo.com
Go ahead and run ping -c1 yahoo.com and you might note you do not get the
same values that I did.
Take a look at you DNS results, paste this in a terminal
My_ip=$(wget -qO - http://myip.dnsomatic.com/)
ping -c1 -w2 $My_ip
If wget is not installed run
My_ip=$(curl http://myip.dnsomatic.com)
ping -c1 -w2 $My_ip
If you do not see a name for your ip address, then there is no reverse
lookup for your ip address provided by your ISP's DNS servers.
