| We *know* life is possible based on water. And we have some idea
| what to look for to detect it.

| And resources for the search are pretty limited. It'd be idiotic to
| expend them looking for something we have no idea how to detect,
| instead of something something we *do* know how to detect.
And besides, the actual observations (i.e. record the spectrum of light
from a planet) don't just throw away the non-water signals. The focus on
water-based stuff happens during the data analysis, and once we get a
clear idea of what to look for, all the old data can be re-analysed to
see if it has the new signatures in it.
