Basically the number of routers. Most of the sattelite delay is speed of light. They are far away if geosynchronous. On land I agree that the routers, etc can be a significant delay. esp for distances of a few to a hundred km. For thousands of km speed of light again becomes the problem. A ping to the UK from Vancouver is about 140ms, which is about c/2.5 for the round trip great circle distance. (c=vel light) >
