  Originally, everything was configured to fill into a fixed array 
of character positions (CRT screen).

  Once word processing and graphical fonts and 'kerning' was 
introduced, the 'array' became tool that worked within an array of 
pixels, instead of an array of a fixed number of characters.

  However, folks using text for program scripts and other purposes 
may want to have such a mark and cut or mark and edit and replace 
'feature'.

  But most "text editors" *ARE* working with a fixed set of 
character positions, whether user configurable or not, so it would 
make sense to me that an 'advanced' editor would include a method to 
mark and manipulate parts of a text file in a columnar manner.
To include a compliant 'clipboard' where the pastebox is defined by 
the 'clipped' set.
