If you're willing to give up using random access and only use > sequential access, then they do not have to be the same length. You can have random access by using an auxiliary index table. Indirect, yes. And the index has to be kept. Or you can have a number of (fixed size) columns at the beginning of each row indexing the variable length column. Many tricks :-) -- Cheers, Carlos.
