The Maunder Minimum lasted 70 years.  The "Little Ice Age" began several 
years before.  There were also some very warm years during that period. 
The level of solar irradiance is not known with certainty but 10Be and 
14C records, and geomagnetic storm records, indicate decreased solar 
activity during that time.

Additionally, fossil pollen is very good proxy for temperature and 
hydrologic conditions.  If you love U. Wyoming researchers very very 
much, look at Bryan Shuman's work:

He figured out that the earth has been in an extended cooling trend but 
recent anthropogenic carbon inputs have reversed that.

Sad, innit?
