I blame the Sperry F3 Manual. Most attitude gyros were run by vacuum. This one was electric, and that required thicker spindle oil. If the plane had been left out below zero F, the gyro could take a long time to warm up. Otherwise, you risked rapid precession and toppling. It had been -10 F the last two nights. If the warning had been in the manual, I'm sure Peterson would have switched on the gyro well ahead of time, and music wouldn't have been going down hill for the last 60 years.
