Be able to open more than one file at a time. 2. Understand Forth, and other languages so it can autocomplete structures such as IF etc. 3. Use color to identify Language Words, numbers, etc using color highlighting. 4. If I have to pay money then it must be able to interface to at least VFX, and SwiftForth. 5. Available for Windows and Linux, and it would be nice to be available for MacOs. 6. Be changeable so I can configure it to meet my requirements 7. Must be simple to learn, using the mouse for common actions Would like to have features; 1. Print listings with line numbers. 2. Integrate with development software would be a nice like, ie; call the compiler/debugger from the editor. So far the only editor I know of that meets all the "must have" and "like to have" features is Visual Studio Code. It is available for Windows, Linux, MacOs, it's free, and even the source is available. Several have suggested Emacs, or various versions of Vim, these are extremely capable programmers editors that are user programmable and support multiple languages the only minus I see with them is that they are extremely keyboard driven that require multi-key commands to get anything done thereby having a long learning curve. I realize that if I switch to using Linux instead of Windows I will need to learn then in the long run. So for now I've installed Visual Studio Code, GVim, Vim, Emacs, Karen, SciTe , and GEdit on a Linux PC and will practice using them to see what kind of learning curve is associated with them and what features can be implemented. Tomorrow I start the coding/debugging part of my current programming project and I will work with these editors every once in a while to take a break from that task. -- Cecil - k5nwa
