There is certainly no need for the behaviour to be unspecified in general - merely that it is undefined by the C standards. In particular, the offsetof macro definition most commonly used with gcc is: #define offsetof(type, member) __builtin_offsetof (type, member) Since this is documented, it is implementation-specified behaviour rather than unspecified behaviour. A compiler may also say in its documentation that the common definition: #define offsetof(st, m) ((size_t)&(((st *)0)->m)) is allowed. Of course, a compiler can also treat such a definition as legal only if the macro is called "offsetof" and it is in a header <stddef.h>, and launch nasal daemons if you try to use the same sort of construct anywhere else. (That's a hint to Bart - if you find something interesting in one of the compiler's header files, don't assume you can copy it in your own code.)
