Ein Teil wird stattdessen dadurch erzeugt, dass durch Stoß mit den beschleunigten Elektronen ein Elektron aus der Atomhülle "geschossen" wird. Das passiert besonders effizient, wenn die kinetische Energie der beschleunigten Elektronen ungefähr der Energie entspricht, die das Elektron der Atomhülle braucht, um das Kontinuum zu erreichen und das Atom zu verlassen. Die Elektronenkonfiguration des Rest-Atoms ist wegen dem "unten" fehlenden Elektron nicht wirklich stabil. Nach (sehr) kurzer Zeit passieren Übergänge, die im Ergebnis dazu führen, dass wieder alle "unteren" Orbitale mit Elektronen gefüllt sind. Wie fast allen spontanen atomaren Übergängen wird dabei elektromagnetische Strahlung frei. Weil dabei "innere" Elektronen beteiligt sind, sind die energetischen Abstände zwischen den beteiligten atomaren Zuständen groß und die abgegebene Strahlung entsprechend kurzwellig. Anders als die Bremsstrahlung enthält diese Strahlung Linien, die für jede Atomsorte anders ist. Deswegen nennt man diesen Anteil "charakteristische Röntgenstrahlung".
