The original 'readlinen' was a dedicated function used only in one place, and there was no need for a return value. What I didn't explain about my comment was that all my functions are either prefixed with "function " or with "proc " (even when I was writing a lot of C when they are just empty macros) to further highlight what a routine is doing. (Otherwise C function definitions tend to blend not only into each other but with other kinds of declarations.) -- Bartc
