Yes, and that is a big problem. At run time, you have to check that the passed parameters make sense: (+ 123 "apples" "oranges") does not work in lisp either. This checking at run time is the principal reason the speed of lisp is quite low, even when compiling it. Lisp spends an awful lot of time checking the arguments, what C generated code doesn't do since the types are checked at compile time. That was one of the reasons I liked C. raw speed!
