agree with your "filters" idea.
and even if you pass them, and become a master,
you can still get derailed by life events
or that project you worked on so hard gets stopped
or that company you worked for 5 years goes belly up
or that woman you married goes nuts
or your boss aggravates upper management
or you get Lasic surgery and they screw your eye up and you have no
depth perception
or ......
point is it takes a lot of "luck" besides doing all the right things
but everyone knows that
the universities I went to are excellent, and are still excellent, no
overhaul needed in the science and engeneering.
