I got interested in learning how to "speak" in the formalism. I also 
wanted to learn some appreciation for "elegance" and "beauty" in a 
proof. I also was astounded at some of the deep-seated practical 
implications for some relatively core things: Fourier transforms; the 
simple Taylor expansion being at the root of why *everything* in physics 
is a harmonic oscillator near a stable equilibrium point; the residue 
theorem in complex variable integrals; and what Feynman also called the 
most beautiful equation in the world.

I was more interested in how math was connected with the world, but I 
also got very interested in how people think, deduce, induce, infer. 
This was part of my interest in philosophy too.

So was your physics education useful for your job?
