LOL. Some people go to college to find a life-long career. And it
probably makes them lose sleep later when they decide they want to
change careers. ("Why did I go to school all that time, only to change
direction now?") I think the stat now is that people change jobs six
times between the ages of 24 and 50, and the number of career changes is
1-2 on average. Some people do it sooner, other people do it later. In
the U.S. 25% of the job market is in Sales, but there is no major in
college for that career. So everyone who goes to college and ends up in
Sales, is their college education a waste?
I myself found the college education productive for something other than
defining a life-long career, which is an expectation statistically bound
to disappoint anyway.

Well, let's just agree to disagree. Online social clubs for the sake of
fun chatting exist on facebook or twitter or whatever. And there, the
intent is being civil and mannered and social, and there is no
expectation that you have any knowledge about any particular subject of
conversation, because there is no charter about what the conversations
are going to be about. But this is a group about physics, not about
gardening or woodworking or Greek statuary or the death penalty. I have
no expectations that anyone on this group will know anything about
woodworking. Since there is a common theme of interest for sci.physics,
then in my opinion, there is also some expectation of familiarity, the
same way that those who would be part of a woodworking club could be
expected to know what a lathe is and to know the differences between
pine and walnut wood.
