Back in Ye Olde Days eggs were preserved by packing them in wood ash or submerging them in water glass (sodium silicate). Supposedly they were good for a year or more. Cynically, if you want to sell refrigerators to Eskimos and the American housewife you first have to convince them food will rot if not refrigerated within 15 minutes.
