One winter that I spent in Arizona was very wet. It wasn't a big deal but 
for a few days I could neither go north to Ajo or east to Casa Grande or 
Tucson. The arroyos, called washes by the Anglo population, seldom had any 
water. In areas where the wash is fairly deep there may be a bridge. For 
those without bridges there are usually depth markers so you can judge 
whether or not you can drive across the ford. Some people judge poorly. 

Often the washes are dammed at suitable locations. If it rains a small 
pond is formed for livestock or irrigation purposes. The desert Pima used 
that strategy for their summer encampments. The years when it didn't rain 
they would visit their riverine cousins along the Gila or Salt rivers, 
provide entertainment, work in the irrigated fields, or do other odd 
labor. I suppose it was sort of a welfare system. Like many of today's 
homeless the migratory desert tribes didn't want a settled life style.
