A counterpoise is a wire, usually connected to earth at one end, and running on top of the earth or quite close to it, so that an end-fed antenna behaves more like a balanced antenna so as to keep the high voltage part of the standing wave AWAY from the transmitter. Think about the standard dipole, the high voltages are at the ends, the low or zero voltages of the standing wave are in the middle Gareth G4SDW
